Bee Products: The Original Superfoods

In his book ‘Superfoods, The Food and Medicine of the Future,’ David Wolfe calls bee products ‘The original superfoods.’ Why does this world expert on superfoods give bee products this prestigious label?

The Oxford dictionary defines a superfood as ‘A nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.’ Bee products are some of the most nutrient-rich natural foods on the planet!

Long before the word ‘superfood’ appeared in a dictionary, billions of tiny workers were busy making some of the oldest superfoods known: Propolis, Royal Jelly and Bee Pollen. Each one perfectly fits the superfood definition and is packed with beneficial nutrients for optimal health.

Before David Wolf brought superfoods into the spotlight, before health bloggers introduced us to goji berries, maca powder, raw cacao and quinoa, ancient cultures were using bee pollen, propolis and royal for energy, healing and beauty.

Bee pollen is one of the most nutrient-packed foods on earth.

It’s abundant with active enzymes, many of which are useful for healthy digestion. It’s high in vitamins – especially B Vitamins, as well as Vitamins C, D and E. Bee Pollen is rich in minerals like calcium, copper, iron, manganese, selenium sulphur and zinc to name a few. Incredibly, Bee Pollen is also a great source of protein – with more protein (gram to gram) than meat, eggs or cheese!

Bee pollen is plant-based so these wonderful nutrients are more easily absorbed by your body.

Those ancient cultures didn’t have our technology, but they knew good food when they saw it!

Cleopatra was famous for bathing in milk and honey and it’s widely reported she used Royal Jelly to maintain her legendary beauty.

Royal Jelly remains mystical, even to scientists who can’t pinpoint its active ingredient. On the nutrition scale, there’s no doubt Royal Jelly is a superfood! Royal Jelly contains B Vitamins and is the second richest natural source of Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). Royal Jelly contains calcium, zinc, iron, and manganese. Royal Jelly is a potent antioxidant, stimulates energy and is often called ‘the rejuvenator’ or ‘fountain of youth.’

The last of the beehive superfoods is Propolis. It’s listed last here but is not last in any other way!  Propolis is the colony’s health insurance. It prevents bacteria and viruses from entering the beehive and is reported to have similar benefits for humans!

Propolis is yet another amazing ancient natural superfood, rich in Vitamin C, E and pro-Vitamin A. One of the most unique and beneficial nutrient factors in propolis is its incredibly high levels of bioflavonoids which make it one of nature’s most active antioxidant substances.
