What is super about superfoods?

cSuperfoods have more nutrients per calorie

Real superfoods are naturally packed with nutrition. Superfoods are not always low in calories. Some, like avocados, almonds and walnuts are considered high in calories but offer incredible nourishment and health benefits. Consider the humble avocado. The average contains about 240 calories, many of which come from fat. The fat however, is monounsaturated fat that can reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and maintain HDL (good) cholesterol. Avocados are high in antioxidant Vitamin C & E. Both promote healthy skin, improve immune health and fight free radical damage. Avocados contain 18 amino acids for protein, which is more easily absorbed and digested than protein obtained through animal foods. Avocados contain potassium to help reduce blood pressure and carotenoids for skin and eye health. They also contain fibre and only the smallest trace of natural sugar.

By comparison, a standard-size chocolate bar has a similar number of calories with little to no vitamin or mineral nutrients. Like the avocado, many of these calories come from fat, but unlike the superfood avocado, the fat in a chocolate bar is saturated fat which clogs arteries and contributes to heart disease. The balance of calories in a chocolate bar are derived from sugar which is acid forming and toxic, causes insulin spikes and contributes to a range of illnesses and medical conditions including obesity and diabetes.

Which would you rather snack on?

Superfoods are natural, low-interference foods

Most superfoods are consumed or delivered in their natural form. They don’t come from a factory, they come from the ground and from the ocean, from plants and from animals. Ideally, other than perhaps being packed into a box for transporting, your superfoods have had minimal interference from humans, are pesticide and chemical free and probably organic.
