01The refined sugar problem
Most breakfast spreads are dessert in a jar.
Turn over a jar of Nutella and sugar is the very first ingredient, meaning there’s more of it than anything else. More than half the jar is refined sugar - around 56g in every 100g. Most supermarket jams aren’t far behind.
Refined sugar is empty sweetness that sends energy up fast and down just as quickly, and too much is linked to tooth decay in kids. Our Superfood Spread contains 0g refined sugar. Its sweetness comes from the natural sugars in Manuka honey, and those come with real goodness built in.
Why natural sugars aren’t the enemy
- They come with real nutrition. Natural sugars come packaged with fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
- Slower digestion. Fibre and protein slow down how fast the body digests and absorbs the sugar, which helps prevent sharp blood sugar spikes and crashes.
- Sustained energy. The body uses glucose from whole foods as the main fuel for its cells and brain.
